Surface wind is measured by wind sensors located near both ends of the runway at a lateral distance of 120 m from the runway centerline and at the height of 6 m above the ground. Wind sensor is installed also on the tower (height 70 m).
Visibility on RWY is measured by transmissiometers located near at the both ends of the runway and near middle point of the runway.
When the horizontal visibility is less than 1500 m (1000 during twilight and night), transmissiometers values are transformed to RVR by using tables for different levels of runway edges light.
The height of the cloud base is measured by ceilometers, installed near the threshold and at a distance about 1000 m from the threshold.
Sensors placed at the meteorological park define temperature and dew point.
Wind shear is defined by:
  1. Wind sensor installed on the tower (height 70 m);
  2. Balloon and radiosonde;
  3. Information received from aircraft reports.

4  Types of services

4.1 Met flight documentation and consultation by a meteorological situation (on request) at the “Zvartnots” aerodrome is supplied to flight crew and ATC controllers by the airport meteorological center.

The flight documentation comprises a significant weather chart, upper wind and upper air temperature chart, and the latest available aerodrome forecast, actual weather for the destination and for alternate aerodromes.

Aerodrome actual weather reports, and aerodrome forecasts are issued as listed in Table GEN -3.5.3.1 and the respective AD-part.

Area forecast for low-level flights including under VFR, operating below FL 150 (572 hPa) within Yerevan FIR is issued by Meteorological Center.
The low-level forecast contains the following information (as indicated Annex3, item 6.6.2): Special features of the meteorological situation, significant weather phenomena as specified for low level flights, surface visibility, clouds, (height of cloud base is given above the sea level), frizzing level, minimum QNH, upper winds and upper-air temperatures.
The flight documentation comprises a significant weather chart, upper wind and upper air temperature chart, the latest available aerodrome forecast, actual weather for the destination and for alternate aerodromes.

4.2 MET flight documentation and consultation by a meteorological situation (on request) at the “Gyumri” aerodrome is supplied to flight crew and ATC controllers by the aerodrome meteorological office. Aerodrome reports, and aerodrome forecasts are issued as listed in Table GEN-3.5.3.2 and the respective AD-part.
4.3 MET flight documentation of the “Stepanavan” aerodrome is supplied to flight crew and ATC controllers by the aerodrome meteorological station. The flight documentation comprises a form AV-5, the latest available aerodrome forecast, actual weather for the destination aerodromes.
Aerodrome reports, and aerodrome forecasts are issued as listed in TableGEN-3.5.3.3 and the respective AD-part.

5  Notification required from operators

The notification required from operators is provided in accordance with the ICAO Annex 3part 2.3.

6  Aircraft reports

Aircraft observation are made during flight within Yerevan FIR as well as during the climb-out or approach phases of flight regarding to all weather phenomena, which in opinion of pilot-in-command may affect safety and the efficiency of other aircraft operation or are not accurately forecasted.
Aircraft meteorological observations shall be reported to appropriate ATS units as soon as practicable.
Aircraft crew shall always report icing (irrespective of intensity), moderate or severe turbulence and wind shear encountered, even if previously reported to the aircraft. Observations, which have not been possible to report during the flight, shall be reported as soon as practicable on arrival.

8.1  General

For the safety of air traffic, the Meteorological Authority maintains an area meteorological watch and warning service. This service consists partly of a continuous weather watch within the lower and upper FIR and the issuance of appropriate information (SIGMET) by Meteorological Watch Offices and partly of the issuing of warnings for the respective aerodrome and, subject to agreement, for other aerodromes by all aeronautical MET offices.

8.2  Area meteorological watch service

NIL

8.3  Warning service
Aerodrome warnings are provided by MET center of airport “Zvartnots” and MET office airport “Shirak”.
Warnings for the protection of parked and moored aircraft or other equipment at the airport will be issued if one or several of the following phenomena:
  • squall2
  • thunderstorm
  • hail
  • frost3
  • surface wind speed is 15 meters per second (30 KT) and more (irrespective of direction)
  • tropical cyclone
  • freezing precipitation
  • snow
  • hoar frost or rime
  • sand-storm
  • dust-storm
  • rising storm or dust
  • strong surface wind and gusts
